August 2015 – Lysterfield

This was to be our first club paddle at Lysterfield Lake. Prior trips were made by Tony & Dennis to check out the suitability of this venue. Melbourne had experienced colder than usual weather over the preceeding fortnight. Snow had been falling at low altitudes and the cold wind created a real chill factor. Regardless of this 5 paddlers made the trip to the lake using 3 cars. Warm layers of clothing were a must. It took just 30 minutes to reach the lake. Tony backed the trailer right to the waters edge.  By 11 am we were off paddling clockwise around the lake. With only a light breeze blowing we had ideal conditions. A white heron was feeding amongst the bullrushes. Cockatoos, kookaburras, blue wrens, ducks and coots were all sighted. We heard frogs croaking near the lakeside. At the top of the lake a creek flowed in through a forest of bullrushes. It might be interesting to see  how far upstream we could paddle. It was great to welcome Marie our new member. We talked about the need for a first aid kit on these trips. Tony had the water boiling & sausages sizzling when we arrived back. It was a very successful outing. Thanks to Tony for all his help and hard work. Well done to our paddlers – Lyn, Carol, Joy, Marie & Dennis.
